A moody little French print with plenty of old-world character.
This vintage framed print features “La Comparaison,” a French interior scene with two women gathered at a dressing table. The image has a softly aged, sepia-toned look, set behind glass with layered matting and a worn gilt-style frame.
The wear is part of the story here. The frame and mat show visible age, scuffing, edge wear, discoloration, and patina, giving the piece that found-in-an-old-shop feeling. It would be beautiful layered into a gallery wall, styled in a powder room, library, bedroom, or tucked onto a shelf with books and brass.
“La Comparaison” is associated with the 18th-century French printmaker Jean-François Janinet, after Nicolas Lavreince. The National Gallery of Art identifies the work as “La Comparaison” by Jean-François Janinet after Nicolas Lavreince, and the Louvre also lists Janinet works under this title from 1786. This piece appears to be a later vintage reproduction, not an original 18th-century engraving.
